We are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the highway and have a systematic programme for checking on and maintaining the quality of the roads in the town. If you notice problems at any time please report it to us.
We are not responsible for the following types of road:
Private roads
The maintenance is usually the joint responsibility of the owners of the properties fronting that street.
New developments that will become public highway in the future
The developer who built the roads generally has an agreement with us to adopt the road in the future, on the condition that the road is constructed and maintained to an agreed standard. Once this agreement has been fulfilled we will maintain the highway. This can take time and the developer may be responsible for a road for several years after it is built.
Tell us about any problems you have experienced with roads such as potholes, damage to road markings or general issues with the road surface.
Please note, the severity of the pothole and, therefore, the criteria for attention is determined by the risk it poses to road users. This is difficult to judge since all potholes present some risk. The factors to be taken into account include size and depth of pothole; traffic type, speed and volume; road alignment and visibility and also the position in relation to road width.
For more information on our inspection regime, the criteria we use and intervention levels, please take a look at our fact sheet attached below
