Council health and safety officers were at Barnfield College recently for a college-organised health day for students who have just completed hair and beauty courses.

The officers provided health and safety information for approximately 100 graduates who are about to embark on a career in the hair and beauty industry.

The Health and Safety team’s attendance at this event has enabled the newly qualified beauticians to enter the industry fully fledged with knowledge of the health and safety issues associated with the work.

The officers focused on health and safety topics relevant to the hair and beauty industry such as slips and trips, electrical safety and general hygiene.

The students were also warned of the dangers of contact dermatitis (skin reaction) caused by inappropriate hand protection and exposure to irritants and sensitisers.

In addition to the information provided, leaflets were handed out detailing best and safe practices.

The beauticians, especially those who intend on setting up their own business, were familiarised with what the Council’s Health & Safety officers will be looking out for during their regular inspections.

Cllr Joan Bailey, portfolio holder with responsibility for environmental heath, said: "Priority areas such as contact dermatitis and slips and trips are extremely important in this industry and holding events like this will help bring home the importance of this to future employees and employers in the industry. It also goes some way towards protecting the people of Luton".

She added: “Employers have a legal duty to appoint a competent person to deal with health and safety matters and that is why we were pleased to be able to attend this event.”

A similar event focusing on new students will be held in September 2009 at the same venue, and it is expected that even more students will be involved.
