The Government requires local highway authorities to prepare a Rights of Way Improvement Plan (RoWIP) to safeguard rights of way, make them easier and more enjoyable to use and available to a wider range of people.
Public Rights of Way are paths with public access that include:
- Footpaths: for pedestrians only (and mobility buggies)
- Bridleways: for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
- Byways: for all types of traffic
These can be paths on their own, or may pass through an area of public open space, but they do not generally include pavements along the edge of roads or cycleways.
Research carried out by the Council during Spring 2007 has identified five key themes. Full details of this research are available on request from the Transport Planning Team.
Public consultation on the plan was originally due to end on 17 December but has been extended to Friday 4 January 2008. You can either download the document and complete the online questionnaire or pick up a copy from your local library or community centre from Monday 8 October. If you wish to receive the document and questionnaire by post, please call 01582 546255.
