Burglar alarms

Burglar alarms can cause a noise nuisance to neighbours. Register key holder details with the council and the police and make sure your alarm has a 20 minute cut-off device.

I have a burglar alarm, what should I do?

• Register your alarm
• Make sure your alarm has a working 20 minute cut-off device.  Try contacting the alarm installer or manufacturer for information or have the alarm inspected.
• Have your alarm serviced at least once a year.
• Let us know if your key holder details change.

What information is required when I register my alarm?
We will ask you for the contact details of two people (key holders) who know how to reset your alarm and have a spare set of keys to your property.  If you have a alarm maintenance company or your alarm is owned by someone else, you can also register their details.

What happens if my alarm goes off and the key holders cannot be contacted?
If your alarm sounds continuously for more than 20 minutes or intermittently for more than an hour then:

• we may need to break into your property to silence the alarm.
• we may need to resecure your property by changing the locks.
• we will charge you for any costs associated with silencing your alarm. This could be as much as £400.

My key holders have changed, what should I do?
To update your key holder information, complete a registration form

How can I make a complaint about a burglar alarm?

• if the alarm is sounding, call the police 01582 40 12 12 and ask them to contact any registered key holders
• call 01582 51 03 30, Mon-Fri, 9am to 6pm, except Wed, 10am to 6pm 
• call 01582 54 65 51 (Noise Patrol), 9.30pm to 2.30am, Friday (May to Sept), Saturday (all year)
• complete an online form
