The management and conservation of traditional Chalk Downland is best carried out by the grazing of livestock.  This may involve sheep, cattle or goats.

In Luton, the grazed areas are:

  • Galley Hill (usually with sheep)
  • Warden Hill (usually with cattle)
  • Bradger’s Hill (usually with cattle)

Grazing helps to reduce the vigour of coarse weeds and grass and keeps scrub growth in check.  The conservation of Chalk Downland is heavily dependent on grazing, which is the most important conservation tool in the Chilterns.

Animals on council sites belong to grazers, and grazing is under license.  People looking for grazing opportunities should contact the Nature Conservation Service at the John Dony Field Centre for availability.
