Disabled bathroom
If you have a disability that makes living in your property difficult, there is assistance you can receive from us to make your situation easier.

What sort of work would qualify for help?

  • improving wheelchair access into and movement around your home
  • disabled access to showers
  • stair lifts
  • hoists
  • kitchen adaptations

Your first step is to contact the Adult Social Care Referral Management Team on 01582 54 76 60. For a disabled child under the age of 18, you should contact the Children’s Initial Assessment Team on 01582 54 76 53 and request an assessment by an Occupational Therapist.

If necessary an Occupational Therapist will visit you in your home, assess your needs and look at options to assist you, which may include an adaptation to your home.

Demand for this service is high and there may be a delay before an Occupational Therapist is able to visit you. We give priority to people with the greatest need in order to safeguard their health, safety, well-being or independence.

Small modifications such as grab rails can be done quickly. However, if you need something like a stair lift or a walk in shower, the waiting time could be much longer.

Equipment will always be considered before adaptations to the home, and minor adaptations before major ones.

If you are a Council Tenant we will complete your adaptation.

If you are a Homeowner or a Private Tenant then you will need to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant.

Either way your first contact should be the Adult Social Care Referral Management Team on 01582 54 76 60

Other options
There may be other alternatives that can help you more quickly. For example, moving to alternative accommodation that has already been adapted and will suit your needs or is better and easier suited to being adapted, for example ground floor accommodation.

If you would be willing to move into a more suitable home you should contact the allocations team on 01582 54 66 46 or housing.allocations@luton.gov.uk

For more detailed information about adaptations, including the types of adjustments that can be made, see our factsheet at the bottom of the page.
