Support is also needed for 16 and 17 year olds, who in the view of the law, are deemed to be children and have issues of varying need.

To provide this service and support we have established the 16+ Team.  The objective of the team is to work to support young people in moving on to independence and assisting them with the transition to adulthood and the responsibilites this includes.

Working under the newly implemented Children's (Care Leavers) Act 2000, the team provides advice and direct support with day to day issues such as homelessness, education, training and employment.

The team has worked hard to develop close and effective links with other specialist teams who can offer more specific advice and guidance, covering topics like drug and alcohol difficulties, mental health difficulties, sexual health matters and benefit queries.

The team can be contacted directly for any advice relating to the leaving care system, or on issues of support needs for 16 to 17 year olds.

As part of the 16+ Team's approach to meeting the needs of looked after young people, a Teenage Pregnancy Worker is now in post.
