This is a specialist educational service which works with settings and schools supporting children and young people with speech, language and communication difficulties. Access to the service is through referral from a range of professionals in consultation with parents.

This service maintains close links with the speech and language therapy service and health services.

What does the service offer me and my family?

  • Observation/ assessment of your referred child in their setting/school
  • Discussion with staff regarding practical advice and practical strategies and resources to help the child access learning
  • Support in setting targets for your child’s individual educational plan
  • Support for transitions, when your child is moving from school to school
  • Liaison with other educational health and social services
  • Advice on developing your child’s speech, language and communication skills.

What does the service offer nurseries, schools and pre-school settings?

  • This service supports children with speech, language and communication difficulties through advice and training. Areas of advice offered include specific strategies to adapt the environment and differentiate the curriculum
  • Advice on appropriate resources to support education and social development
  • Support in setting targets for individual education plans
  • Support for transitions
  • Face to face training and training online, including the Speech and Language Inclusion Development Programme 2011-12
  • Supporting settings in establishing language groups (planning, demonstration, example materials, critical friend)
  • Information and guidance materials for specific areas such as ‘Year of Communication 2011’
