In general, the Hearing Impaired Outreach Service will respond to a request from a school that has a child identified with a permanent hearing loss. A telephone call will be made to establish the support needed and a referral form will be sent for the school to complete prior to an initial visit. The appropriate member of the HIPO team will then arrange to visit the school.
Assessing of pupils needs in relation to the way the child is:
- Using their hearing
- Communicating with others affected by his ‘listening environment’
- Socialising with other children and adults
- Accessing the national curriculum
- Participating in all school activities
Advice and support for staff
- Information concerning hearing loss and the implications for learning
- Teaching strategies considering Hearing Impairment
- In-Service Training on Deaf awareness
- Advice with reference to curricula access
- Suggestions for modification of teaching materials
- Implications of environmental factors, positioning etc
- Support to create a listening environment
- Advice on hearing aids, FM systems and appropriate technology
- Advice concerning IEP’s & Statement of Special educational needs
Applying the advice
Once the advice is given to the school they are encouraged to mplement the recommendations. Further support will be offered if the school continue to require it.
