If you are the only adult living in your property you will be entitled to a 25% discount off your council tax bill. If your property is unoccupied you may be entitled to a discount
Some people are also entitled to be disregarded (ie not counted) when calculating how much you should pay. This may result in your property being treated as if it contained only one resident or even no residents. The following people are entitled to be disregarded when counting the number of adults resident in your property:
- full time students, Project 2000 nurses, foreign languages assistance, student nurses, apprentices and YT trainees
- severely mentally impaired people
- convicted and remand prisoners except people in prison for non-payment of fines or council tax
- under 20 year olds who are undertaking or have just completed a qualifying course of further education
- persons for whom child benefit is payable
- patients resident in hospitals, residential care homes, nursing homes, mental nursing homes and hostels providing a high level of care
- people kept in hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983
- care workers earning low pay usually for charities, such as Community Service Volunteers
- persons caring for someone with a disability who is not a spouse, partner or child under 18
- residents of certain hostels or night shelters
- members of international headquarters, defence organisations and diplomats.
