The Audit Commission, an independent government agency, has examined the performance of local authorities and produced a judgement for each authority.

Luton Borough Council is performing well, according to an independent report released by the Audit Commission

The corporate assessment report shows that the Council is a good community leader and that it understands the needs of local people. Good progress is being made in improving local services, and the Council and its partners are working well together to improve the health of residents, especially those people who are more disadvantaged or vulnerable.

Gary Hammersley, Audit Commission senior manager, said: "Luton Borough Council is working well with other organisations to improve quality of life for local people. In particular, good progress is being made around regenerating the local economy, making the roads safer, and improving the quality of the local environment. However, there are some areas where the Council needs to improve. More needs to be done to reduce crime and disorder, and services should take better account of the needs of older residents."

Strengths include:

  • prospects for children and young people in the borough are good, with improving levels of educational attainment and good support for vulnerable children
  • the Council manages its resources effectively
  • health and fitness programmes are targeted at those most in need

Areas for improvement include:

  • strengthening performance management arrangements, so that all stakeholders can have a much clearer picture of how the Council is meeting its priorities
  • working with partner organisations to ensure a clear set of ambitions and priorities for the borough
