In Adult Social Care our aim is to enable vulnerable people to live as independently as possible in their own homes, for as long as it is safe to do so, leading valued and fulfilled lives. The focus is on enabling vulnerable adults - including older people, people with physical and mental disabilities and carers - to be treated as equal citizens, helping them as far as possible to access mainstream community services.
In Housing we work with a range of local partners to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of secure affordable housing of good standard across Luton that is available for people who want or need them. Additionally, as a landlord, we offer a range of support services for our 8,000 tenants such as allocations, repairs, help with rent payments, tenant activities and generally ensuring council homes are safe, warm and comfortable.
Our Community Development Service works closely with community groups to build their capacity and facilitate residents’ involvement in decision making. The CDS also helps to tackle inequalities and manages 13 community centres across Luton.
Through Luton Adult Community Learning we deliver a wide range of accessible adult education opportunities to meet the learning, development and training needs of employers and the local community. This includes working towards formal qualifications as well as Basic Skills, ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages) and Family Learning courses
We actively support the Department of Health 'Change4Life' campaign, running a series of events to help residents eat well, move more and live longer.
We administer ‘Supporting People’, a government programme which plans and funds housing related support in our area in order to help vulnerable people to live more independently. We do this in partnership with the local probation service and NHS Luton to plan and commission local services.
