The role of the area committee will be to consider matters relating to their areas, particularly in such fields as service development, service improvement, neighbourhood renewal, regeneration and community planning. The area committee also advises the executive in relation to executive functions, which affect their areas. They consider matters that have been raised through the ward meetings, address issues raised by the individual ward members, by local interest groups or matters which have been referred to them for consideration by the executive or by the council.
The council works in close partnership with a wide range of local organisations to make Luton a safer place to live. Luton's Community Safety Partnership, known as soLUTiONs, is a partnership of organisations that work together in the town to address crime, anti-social behaviour (ASB), drug and alcohol problems and (re) offending behaviour. As a partnership, we believe that by working together we can tackle some of the most deep seated crime and disorder problems affecting Luton.
We place a high value on listening to our citizens. We want to know what you want from your council and as such have an extensive programme of public consultation. The Council regularly consults members of the public and stakeholders throughout the year.
We compile and maintain the register of electors and organise and manage all elections and referenda in the borough. Depending on which body is being elected the frequency of elections held in the borough will vary. An election takes place in most years so you should always make sure that you are on the Voters List.
Emergency planning involves assessing threats and where possible preventing them, tackling major emergencies, carrying out business as usual and restoring normality afterwards. Our emergency planning service assists other organisations such as the Police, Fire and Ambulance services regain normal levels of service following a major emergency.
Our equal opportunities and racial harassment policies outline the commitment to respect the racial and cultural diversity of Luton's local communities. The Council is committed to developing employment practices and service provision to ensure equal opportunities policies are implemented and monitored. Our services are available to Luton residents, all public, private and voluntary organisations in Luton and surrounding areas.
Overview and Scrutiny contributes to the improvement of services for the people of Luton. It can hold the Executive of the Council and some external organisations (including Fire, Police and Health Services) to account for decisions they have made and their performance. Reviews carried out by Scrutiny can and do make a difference to the service that the council and its partners deliver to the town and local communities. The publics views and participation are important to us to ensure the best outcomes for the people of Luton - get involved!
Performance - We are committed to delivering services which compare with the very best, and achieving continuous improvement in all services. We have a legal duty to achieve best value, which the Government has defined as delivering top quality services at a low cost. We have to demonstrate to local people that we are making improvements in all services. The Corporate Plan contains the Council's objectives and targets up to 2011/12, and shows how we will achieve them.
Local democracy -You can find information about your local political representatives, details of all Council meeting. Details on elections, both past and future, and how to register to vote and other information linked to the democratic process.
