School crossing patrols provide a safe place to cross for children and other pedestrians on their journey to and from school.
School Crossing Patrols (SCPs) were introduced in Britain in 1953. They are an important part of the road safety strategy and play a vital role in helping to keep children safe on the roads.
Although it is the parents' responsibility to ensure that their child is safe on the journey between home and school, the SCPs are there to provide safer places to cross.
Within the town there are 45 school crossing patrol sites covered by 52 patrols at various locations.
The road safety team is responsible for the smooth running of the service which includes recruitment, daily staffing, regular supervisory site visits training and assessing viability of potential new sites against nationally set criteria, see downloads.
