Motability is a government initiated charity to help people receiving the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance or War Pensioners Mobility Supplement to hire a car, or to buy a car through hire purchase.  Under the hire purchase scheme people can buy an electric wheelchair, a new or used car.

For anyone requiring adaptations on the car or help with the initial deposit can apply to Motability for help with this cost.  To hire a car the award of mobility must be for three years or more, anyone awarded a fixed period of two and half years will be offered the option to make up the six month shortfall.  If the award is less than this exceptional circumstances will be considered.

To buy a car on hire purchase the award of mobility component must have at least two years left to run.  To buy a new car on hire purchase the award of mobility component must have at least four years left to run.

The Disability Benefits Unit will pay the mobility component direct to Motability when one of the schemes has been undertaken.

A Motability agreement cannot be renewed if the person awarded the benefit is in hospital, unless it is under the electric wheelchair scheme.
