The role of the area committee will be to consider matters relating to their areas, particularly in such fields as service development, service improvement, neighbourhood renewal, regeneration and community planning. The area committee also advises the executive in relation to executive functions, which affect their areas. They consider matters that have been raised through the ward meetings, address issues raised by the individual ward members, by local interest groups or matters which have been referred to them for consideration by the executive or by the council.
Each area committee has a small budget for specific projects which supplements the council's mainstream spending.
We have increase the number of area committees to four cycles. This will enable concerns raised by local people to be addressed much quicker and therefore decisions by councillors and actions by service areas, implemented more promptly.
We have introduced ward forums, which run from 6.30pm for one hour, prior to the start of the area committee agenda at 7.30pm. These forums will give individuals the opportunity to meet with other people from their ward as well as their ward councillors and share issues of local concern.
Area committee's are:
- Central Luton (Barnfield, Biscot, High town and Saints Wards
- East Luton (Crawley, Round Green, Stopsley and Wigmore Wards
- North Luton (Bramingham, Icknield, Limbury, Northwell and Sundon Park Wards
- South Luton (Dallow, Farley and South Wards
- West Luton (Challney, Leagrave and Lewsey Wards)
The public are encouraged to attend and participate in these meetings.
