Carnival '10
Grey skies didn’t dampen spirits at Luton International Carnival 2010, with around 80,000 people attending the largest one-day event of its kind in Europe.

Around 1,800 people took part in the parade, dancing their way across the town on more than 70 floats in this year's event.

Leader of the Council, Hazel Simmons, congratulated all participants for their dedication and hard work in the lead-up to Carnival, saying: “Luton International Carnival is a place where the creativity and community of Luton are showcased for everyone in our region to celebrate.

“Carnival celebrates creativity and cultural traditions and, given the wide range of community groups, clubs, schools and societies who participated, it is no wonder that the event resonates with so many people.”

Event organiser Andy Grays, Strategic Manager for the Arts at the Luton Cultural Services Trust, said that months of work and experience went into the planning for Carnival, and that the smooth running of this year’s event was testament to all the hard work and dedication going on behind the scenes.

Mr Grays said: “Luton International Carnival 2010 has been a great success. This year’s Carnival saw the largest parade for many years which was enjoyed by more than 80,000 people.

One man who attended this year's Carnival has already written in, saying: “I am Leandro, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. I’m writing because I participated in this year’s Luton International Carnival 2010. It was very nice to see that nearly all races, nationalities and ethnic groups take part in Carnival, reflecting Luton’s cultural and ethnic diversities. It was really great to see that people of all backgrounds come to Carnival to show off their costumes, music, dances and heritage, and all are celebrated together. Luton is one of the most ethnically diverse places in the United Kingdom and it’s great to see your events reflect this.”

Plans for the 2011 Carnival are already well underway and we welcome you all to come and celebrate with us again next year.
