Carer's direct payments

If you are a carer you might be eligible to receive a one-off payment to support your health and wellbeing.

A carer’s direct payment is a one-off payment that can be used to pay for a service that improves your own health and wellbeing, or could be put towards equipment that would help in your caring role.

You may feel that joining a gym or a club would help you to relax and unwind by allowing yourself some ‘me’ time. Or perhaps you spend a lot of time at the laundrette, washing clothes for the person you care for, and would love your own washing machine or tumble dryer so you could save time.

These are the kind of things that a carer’s direct payment may be able to help with.

Please note: A carer’s direct payment is awarded to cover the cost of a service to meet your health and wellbeing needs, or a piece of equipment that would help to reduce the impact of your caring role. It cannot be used for the person you care for.

Can I apply for a carer’s direct payment?

You cannot apply for a direct payment but during your carers assessment you can tell the Assessor about the needs you have. The Assessor will work with you to find out how your needs may be met and you may be awarded a carers direct payment.

What do I have to do?
