What is Meals At Home?
Meals At Home are pre-prepared meals consisting of a main meal and a dessert. People with dietary needs can have special meals such as diabetic, vegetarian, gluten free, puree, kosher or Halal. They are delivered to you by LBC Catering Services, which is part of Luton Borough Council.
Who is it for?
Meals at Home are available to older people and adults with a mental health or physical, sensory or learning disability.
You might be eligible if:
- you live on your own and are having difficulty cooking your own meals.
- the person you live with or your carer is not able to cook for you during the day.
- you are recovering from an operation at home and are unable to cook for yourself - you can get meals at home for the short-term.
What types of meals are available?
Hot meals can be delivered all year round. It is important to eat your hot meal straightaway rather then keeping it warm or putting it in the freezer. This will reduce the risk of food poisoning.
How much will they cost?
Each meal costs £3.40 and there is a three choice menu system on all delivery rounds.
The meals can be paid for weekly or on monthly invoice. A cheque is the normal method of payment.
How can I apply?
To apply for a Meals At Home service you have to receive an assessment of your needs. This can be done by contacting the Referral Management Team on 01582 547659 or 547660.
The money available limits the services that we can offer and we cannot meet everyone’s needs all the time. Some people will have more important needs than others and the assessment process helps us find out whose needs are greatest.
New Tea service
Anyone who receives a hot meal will also be offered a tea service. This is delivered daily with the meal and consists of a choice of both a sandwich on white or brown bread, and a cake, with a piece of fruit or a yoghurt. The cost is £1.50
If you do not want to use our Meals At Home Service to provide you with a hot meal on a daily basis, we can deliver frozen ready meals on a fortnightly basis. Instructions are provided for oven and microwave heating. To ensure food safety they must be kept in a freezer.
Simply order your meals by telephone. For more information about ordering frozen ready made meals contact the Meals At Home Office on 01582 56 04 33.
